Fond farewells and new beginnings

Published on 31st October 2016

It's been a special week at VSA, one of fond farewells and new beginnings. After nearly a decade in our heritage office building in Waring Taylor Street, we packed up and shifted to new premises at 77 Thorndon Quay, Pipitea.

Kura Moeahu, Kaiwhakarite Māori for Parliamentary Services, led us in a moving Poroporoaki (farewell ceremony) and waiata, before we all walked down the stairs for the last time, each of us reflective in our own quiet thoughts and memories of the space we knew so well.

This morning, Kura joined us again, together with Senior Educator Alishia Mansell, to lead us into our new building and provide a Tohi Tangaengae blessing. This involved Karakia – Māori incantations and prayers to invoke spiritual goodwill, guidance and protection in our new space.

These blessings mark the beginning of a new phase for VSA and held special meaning for Kura as well, with our building located on the site of the original Pipitea Pa, where Kura's great, great grandmother once lived.

We look forward to many happy years in our new premises and we're very excited to welcome visitors and volunteers to our lovely new space.
