Development priorities

Our programmes are developed jointly with our in-country partner organisations to increase the capacity of local people and institutions. Our partners identify specific development needs and, together, we develop assignment descriptions for volunteers.

Since 2008 we have increased our in-country field staff to provide greater support to our partner organisations and volunteers, ultimately strengthening our long-term development practice.

In Melanesia we concentrate our efforts on the following development priorities:

  • Rural livelihoods
  • Education
  • Infrastructure maintenance
  • Law and order and governance
  • Health
  • Climate change
  • Gender, children and youth inequalities

VSA aims to increase sustainable development through improving the quality of life in Melanesia by focusing our work on achieving outcomes in productive enterprises, with public service agencies, and with civil society organisations.

VSA's work in Melanesia

VSA works in the New Guinea Islands provinces of East and Welt New Britain, New Ireland and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. In the Solomon Islands, VSA works in Choiseul, Isabel and Western provinces. VSA works in five out of the six provinces of Vanuatu: Sanma, Penema, Malampa, Torba and Shefa.
